An unseasonable snowstorm has hit the US East Coast, with some areas of Massachusetts seeing more than 27in (68cm) of snow.
The authorities say three people have died in snow-related accidents.
More than 2.7 million people have lost their electricity supply from Maryland to Massachusetts - some residents have been warned they may be without power for several days.
In 1979, southern New England received a record 7.5in of snow in October.
On Sunday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) said the "early season winter storm has come to an end across the mid-Atlantic states but continues across eastern New England" and was expected to move towards Canada.
New York has seen unusually early snowfall
Nantucket in Massachusetts experienced wind speeds of 69mph (11km/h), its statement said.
The storm worsened as it moved north, and communities in western Massachusetts were amongst the hardest hit.
In Springfield, Massachusetts, police say a man died when he touched a protective rail surrounding downed power lines.
In Pennsylvania, an 84-year-old man was killed after a tree fell on his house in Temple, state police say.
Another person died in a traffic accident because of the storm in Connecticut.
Connecticut's Governor, Dannel P Malloy, cautioned the 750,000 people who were without electricity in his state that the effects of the storm would still be felt after the snowfall stopped.
"If you are without power, you should expect to be without power for a prolonged period of time," CBS News quoted him as saying.
