Thought I'd bring this thread over from the old boards. Whether home or at work, let us know what you're listening to. Me, public enemy Fear of a Black Planet. Their second best album after the classic Takes a Nation. When the drum track kicks in on "Brutha's Gonna Work it Out" it still makes me wanna get up and salute Professor Griff and the S1W's and receive my orders for the cause. Fuck PE are good.

I'm listening to Manu Chau's "Esperanza." I'm normally not a "world music" fan, but this is hands down one of the best, most original and inspiring records I have ever heard a hands down 10/10. Now I've got "me gusta la vecina, me gustas tu, me gusta marijuana, me gustas tu."

We've been cleaning house all day, here's the playlist so far:

- The Mummies "Death by Unga Bunga" (great Estrus band)

- Playwhatulike "The Best of Digital Underground"

- Hex County "The Deuce" (Hex County Rules)

- Donovan "Barabajagal" (I made my roommates listen to "My Shirt" and "Atlantis," poor bastards.)

- Pink Floyd "Works" ((I think this was an early compilation rather than an album proper (A-Law?), but its my fav PF ever. I loves it.))

- Rentals "Seven More Minutes" (I love this record too.)

- Marah "Let's Cut the Crap (This still may be the best album ever.)

Great thread. Keep 'em comin folks.

Hey can you indie hipsters answer a question for me? I got a copy of some white labels yesterday and they must be from europe because they are a bunch of mash-ups (e.g., 50 Cent vs. NIN, Cameo vs. Ludacris, The Darkness vs. Basment Jaxx, shit like that). One of them however is a female singer or singers who I believe are singing a Pink Floyd song, but with what sounds like a sample of Bowies Sound and Vision as the music.  I'm curious if some one sampled this and this is the original version or who these women are and what the song sounds like for real (the records had no markings).

Thanks to anyone who can help!

this week I have been listening to the Cd's I got at the Nada show on Saturday.

The PLains  -  on earth as it is in heaven

First off, thanks for the free cd Mr. Semer (The Plains).  Was a pleasure meeting you.  That's why I am glad I can write this...
Wow!  This is quickly becoming one of my favorite albums after five or so listens.  There are at least four songs on this album I havelistened to over and over again.  Review to come.

At the Spine - The Curriculum is Never Neutral

I'll also thank you guys indirectly for the music as I ganked Matt's copy.  curriculum is a weird word to spell out.  Haven't absorbed as much of this album yet but I do know I love the 4th track Sand in Your Teeth very very much.  After their live set I can't imagine the album won't be the goods.  Review to come.

This week the truck has seen two CD's of outstanding quality. I fucked Tower Records out of a really great Art Blakley import CD and I have also been enjoying the Rewind 3 sampler from Ubiquity, a very nice series for all those who have ever wondered.

I must say however, even after I spent my CD settlement all in one place, and Tower has put up signs every where about how they are closing or whatever . . . why in the fuck does every major music chain that goes out of business have these mark down sales to get rid of inventory, but jack up the prices of the CD's so that when you think about buying the shit, you really aren't getting a deal.  Fuckers.  Maybe they should think about why they are going out of business, shit weren't CD's cheaper back in 1987 when they were 15.99, I thought shit was supposed to get less expensive the longer the technology was out.  Sorry about the rant.

: What are you listening to?

Maybe all these big fuckers will go out of business and good old fashioned neigborhood record stores can start popping back up.  I never really minded paying a little more at these place because they were always more likely to have more of the cds I was looking for.

Good point about prices.  I think I bought The Pixies Surfer Rosa/Come on Pilgrim  for $14 back in 1989.  No way can I get it for that now.  Shit's crazy.

It loves the new Hives single Walk Idiot Walk.  It also reminded how fucking good Barely Legal was.  Rock, Rock, Rock!

New Beasties is great and since I saw the show on Tuesday at Neumo's I have been listening to The Streets new album repeatedly.  All good things.

I'm sure most of you know this, but Best Buy is a great place to buy new albums.  New releases $9.99.  I got the Killers for $6.99.  Prices even the unemployed can afford.

Helmet! Yeah.  I love that album that has Unsung on it.

  I have been listening to

Nappy Roots - Sick and Tired

Neil Young - Rocking in the Free World.  Farenheit 9/11 reminded me that songs rules my butt.

Ash has new cuts that are pretty decent.  Of course the album is not yet available in the states.

Back into Drive By Truckers.  Women Without Whiskey is so good lyrically I could poop.

Peanut Butter Wolf and Charizma - Red Light, Green Light
great old skool hip hop.  Album was made in 1992 just released in 2003 I think.

Secret Machines - Sad and Lonely.
Not so high on the album overall though.

Oh yeah ZZ Top -Tush is always in my rotation.  No fooling.

Bumblebeez 81 - Going Out Tonight is better than you.

: Re: What are you listening to?

here's the rest of today's at-work selections.

Calmer Than You Are
Local instrumental band that plays music akin to Godspeed You Black Emperor and Do Make Say Think. Some of the guys from Solyoni and The Plains are in this. The two-song live recording they gave me is really good. Play Hangover Helper 8/22 at Sunset.

Bobbyteens
Female-fronted garage rock band from San Fran. Record is out on Estrus and is pretty cool.
www.bobbyteens.com

Bonobo Project - Bonobo Project
Metal band on Global Seepej. Makes me wanna smash stuff.
www.globalseepej.org/bonoboproject

Fey Ray - I Wanna Be New and Perfect
These guys played New Music Monday at Rendezvous for me and were fantastic, one of the best bands in town. Very, very good musicians who use art and prog-rock influences tastefully inside of their indie-emo-rock-britpop style songs. Very pretty stuff. Recommended for fans of Shins and Built to Spill.
www.feyray.com.

The Mummies - Death By Unga Bunga
Incredible garage-rock band from California and the "Kings of Budget Rock." Estrus just release this, which was probably recorded in the early 80s I think. "Danger Man" one of my fav songs I heard last year.
www.themummies.com.

Touchdown Eagle - Who Wants Cake?
Have heard good things whispered about them and it seems well-deserved. Jangly lo-fi indie pop/rock that sounds like it could’ve come out on K Records in the early 90s. Guy and girl both sing and it seems like they really, really like Yo La Tengo.
www.touchdowneagle.com.

Beehive and the Barracudas is the one of the best damn party bands ever! its an offspin of hot snakes, and RFTC. It you have never heard this I highly recommend buying it as quick as you can.  Start with "plasticsoul/whiteapes"  this album is truely amazing. It has been in heavy rotation for me for over a year and i'm still not sick of it.

Souls She Said is a side project of the Icarus Line. its a little more listener friendly and was overlooked by everyone in my opinion.

Matt you are right, if you have never heard Drive like Jeru, you are a dumbhead!!!!

i just woke up so forgive my grammer and spelling.....I'm still sweating out last nights beer.........

holy fuck does the new Old 97s album suck balls. i'm 6 tracks through on the headphones and am about to barf. totally bland and uninspired. its like Fight Songs outtakes. i can't even finish it. this makes me incredibly sad.

it also, by comparison, makes the new marah album not seem like such a disapointment.

Finally found the new Drive-By Truckers.... giving it the first spin... I'm on track 4 ("putting people on the moon") and loving it. The first three sounded radio-friendly... too early to judge whether or not that is a good or bad thing, but they did not catch me first time off.

: Re: What are you listening to?

songs I really like at the moment are

The Star Spangles  -  I don't wanna be crazy anymore

Yung Wun - Tear it up

  Ben Kweller - The Rules

I am suprised to hear that comment about DBT's new album.  The interview they had did in Blender made it sound like a really dark album.

Like anyone gives a shit but here is what I've had my ears on for the last week:

Har Mar Superstar's song DUI, alot like a Ron Jeramy Prince clone, but he has lost the mustache and I think this song is funny as shit (only because I new a guy like that).

The instrumental of the new Destiny Child song, the vocals suck and make me want to die, but Rodney Jerkins or who ever produced this used a sick drum loop.

Von Iva, I don't know who the are but these women make a nice groove, sort of a rock elecronica sort of thing (I think they are a bunch of women from other bands).

The new DJ shadow produced song for the new Blues Explosion album, a bunch of crunchy guitars with a deep bass.

Both of the new songs the Neptunes have put out, the Snoop one (the dirty not the radio version) and the song they did with Slim Thug.

And last but not least if you haven't heard the new Chromeo album (from the cats that used to do the hip hop reviews for Vice Magazine) . . . you suck!

I've been pumping the faint album. It's even better than danse macabre.

I just picked up a turntable, so I am rediscovering tons of old music. I hit up half price books yesterday and scored a 12" single of rick james' "sweet and sexy thing"(thang)

I also got this hilarious steve martin stand up album. Oh man, recorded in 1978 and everything is still funny!! The best part about steve martin is that he doesn't rely on ethnic humor to get laughs. one of the things he talks about is cat handcuffs. for their little front paws. He doesn't trust his cat. ohh goddd. I wish I could stream this stuff for all of you. It is GOLDEN!!

Finnaly got around to picking up Eagles of Death Metal.   I loves it.  Josh Homme is known as Carlo Von Sexron in this group.  I wish my name was Carlo Von Sexron or Dan "The Big Stick" Hefty.  Either way.

They are playing in Seattle soon.  The SHowbox I think.  I saw them open for PLacebo.  They were fucking great.  So was PLacebo.  One of my favorite concerts.

In my CD changer in the car I believe I have:

The Presidents of the United States : Love Everybody
Radiohead : The Bends
Wayne Shorter : Speak No Evil
The Beta Band : The Three EPs
Keith Jarrett : Trio at the Blue Note
Michael Jackson : Thriller (special edition)

I'm diggin the new Presidents album.

Been listening to.....

  Ian Brown - Solarized
New solo efoort form former Stones front.  Like his other other stuff has a real cool electro rock stoner rock feel.  I just feel cool when I listen to him.  He has one of the most distinct voices.

Interpol - Antics    Finally got around to soaking this in.  There are some great cuts on this album.   Most notably the first two.  I guess I aman eigth grade girl.  I don't get this analogy?  Oh well.

: Re: What are you listening to?
: mothrock October 01, 2004, 06:43:30 PM
I inherited the record collection of my boss. It has some pretty sweet stuff, all from the 80's, but good. I am finding out that in the 80's they built entire albums off of one good track. There was a lot of filler material back then, or people were just really shitty song writers, I haven't figured out which. but it is pretty consistent. On almost every record I have listened to, there are only one or two good songs.

I got two more rick james albums, thompson twins, stray cats, madonna's first album, duran duran, the cure, robert palmer(that dude is crazy), 2 david bowie albums, and so much other stuff I have never heard of.

oh yeah.

supertramp= shittiest band I have ever heard

: Re: What are you listening to?
: ashmatty October 09, 2004, 12:56:54 AM
correct mothrock. supertramp are one of the worst bands of all time. "The Illogical Song" is also perhaps the worst single ever recorded.

I been listening to:

The Glasses - The Glasses
Sure I'm biased but the guys really did it. This is a solid album top to bottom and I luvs it.

Drive By Truckers - The Dirty South
Still the best rock band in the world.

Martian Memo to God
This band's two song single is great. They are one of my fav local bands right now.

Matthew Shaw
Can't remember what the album is called, but he's a local guy and his debut album is fantastic, just like John Richards says. John Richards is so smart and cool and knowledgable. I wish I were John Richards.

Hives - Tyrannasaurus Hives
So what is these guys were picked by a Svengali after tryouts just like a boy band, they kick ass. Tracks 4 and 5 rock my ass.

Touchdown Eagle - Let's Eat Cake
These guys rule still. Best K band never signed to K.

Today's selection is Unbelievable truth's album "almost here"(unbelievable truth is thom yorke's brother's band), god the tears were welling up when I put this one on this morning.

not a good way to start your morning.

The new Le Tigre album <<it's great after track 5!

and

Travistan (travis morrison)

: Re: What are you listening to?
: graham November 02, 2004, 02:06:42 AM
I saw Travis Morrison live recently and it was seriously fucking terrible.

: Re: What are you listening to?
: mothrock November 04, 2004, 02:56:16 PM
I don't get how you can say that Travis Morrison was terrible. I went to the show at the crocodile and I thought it was good.

what makes you think it was terrible?

his new band has only been together about a month, I would like to hear you and and the music project you assemble in a month sound that good.

I'll admit they are no dismemberment plan, but it's still travis's music and I'll defend it because I think he has a valid quirkiness to his music. He refuses to be genrefied, which I connect with.

: Re: What are you listening to?
: graham November 04, 2004, 10:22:07 PM
I didn't say "his band was sloppy and poorly organized."
I said the music that they chose to make was simply bad.  It took the elements of Dismemberment Plan's music that were least compelling and pushed them to the forefront, and Morrison's lyrics this time out cross the line from "creative and ristky-- but it works" to fucking dumb as shit.
"Song For the Orca?"

eggghh.

: Re: What are you listening to?
: mothrock November 05, 2004, 03:45:27 PM
I think the thing that confuses most people about travis is that he is not a serious guy. I think that is where some of the problems with dismemberment plan came about, it's such a serious type of band name, but when ever travis performs he has the biggest silliest grin on his face.  And if you listen to "change", a lot of the songs are autobiographical, and I think he just continued that trend. I don't have a problem with that, I think it's great. He's not out to change the world, he is singing about what he knows.

now for the album... yeah there is some irritating crap on there. Like the 4 different parts of "get me off of this coin" where he sings about the penny, the nickel, the dime and the quarter. He sings the song from the point of view of the president that is on each coin. I think he does this only because he lives in DC and stuff like this is actually funny there.

I beg to differ on the music being crap. There is so much worse stuff out there. I don't know where your standards are, but I think what he is doing is not crap. It is on a label, people are buying it. And he is touring.

so... let me ask you this. If travis morrison is crap, what do you think is good? what do you hold in such high esteem and is so lyrically superior? what amazing, phenomenol song writer do you think blows travis morrison out of the water?

: Re: What are you listening to?
: The Snizz March 30, 2005, 11:07:17 AM
Matthew I was on I-5 by Tully's when I called.  No I am not kidding.  I went to Blue Oyster Cult at The Emerald Queen Showroom w/ Wiggins and The Wife.  I have the tour shirt to prove it. It rocked ass.

Reaper, Godzilla and Burnin for You all were fantastic live Hosef.  There was about a four minute bass and drum solo during Godzilla.  O'Ded on Life itself was quite good as well.  And the people at the show.....precious.

p.s.  That casino, not the boat, is ginormous.

: Re: What are you listening to?
: The Snizz March 30, 2005, 03:36:24 PM
I wore my SNIZZ shirt to the show.  Ran into a big agitated man from Wyoming who decidely wanted to kick my ass.  "What does that shirt mean," he asked me several times.  I told him it was just a nickname but he wasn't buying it.  The big fella was close talker. About 2 inches from face. That was really freaking me out.  Personal bubble! He said where he was from, snizz meant a liar and a cheater.  I laughed and mentioned that it also means poontang and shuffled away from the large man quickly.

I am a cheating, lying pussy.

Yes, Arthur Snizzerelli, how is the New Order?

Also, do you have any of the new Oasis.  I heard "Lyla."  It was OK.

I didn't care for the Kaiser Cheifs song I heard.

: Re: What are you listening to?
: The Snizz April 19, 2005, 10:54:00 AM
I have listened to the New Order several times but mostly it has been in the background while I was doing something else.  So, I really don't know if it is good or not yet.  I like the single "Krafty."

Have not heard Oasis.  They are touring the states w/ Kasabian and Jet.  So far no Seattle dates.

Heard a new Weezer single.  At first listen it sounded really cheesy.

Kaiser Chiefs album is asi asi.  I love "I Predict a Riot" though.

Has anyone else heard the album from Black Mountain? Over the last couple of weeks I have heard nothing but good things about them and incredulous reports of them opening for Coldplay at White River. I was at Best Buy tonight to get the new New Pornos, but I wasn't satisfied just giving them $9.99 so I grabbed the Black Mountain CD as well. So far:

Track 1 - Stupid, kinda Polyphonic Spree-ish
Track 2 - Awesome, very Black Sabbath (at least in the drum sound)
Track 3 - Okay

That's as far as I've gotten, but I definitely turned it way up when that second track came on.

Morningwood's album is kind've fun. They are in Seattle on the 24th at
