Hello gang. I thought I would take the opportunity to share this night with everyone, since not everyone got to go to this show.
Seeing as how most people that hear about Nadamucho NMM are just bands that are like "sweet, an easy show to set up, low stress" , and while the point is partly for new bands to cut their teeth on the scene a little bit, I think the other HUGE part that is left out is PARTICIPATION. I've played at NMM before, but I have gone as an audience member more times than I have actually performed. I think more people should have the same attitude, that way when your number comes up, and it's time to play a NMM you can rely on more than just your real life friends to show up.
phew! now that I got that off my chest, I'll start with the review:
I walk up to high dive and I am greeted by a charming lad with an afro and a huge smile, this would be Kent. Kent is officially the most laid back door man in Seattle. I introduce myself as the Nadamucho rep for that night, and I walk inside. The first band was late getting there but they arrived ready to rock. The first band is called HuhUh, their name was botched on just about every flyer,poster and newspaper ad available for the show. They set up with two keyboard, a drumset and two guitars. One of the keyboardists was wearing an outfit that could not have possibly been comfortable. it looked like a fashion mash up between the girl from small wonder and a 60's style mod outfit:

or something like that. They busted into their first song and I was very impressed with the sound, exceedingly quirky and clearly understandable vocals. They cut right through the mix, these ladies could sing. There was a song about different styles of haircuts that I found amuzing and then there was my favorite song of all called "drop cop", which is apparently about those rent-a-cops that pick up cash drops from various businesses. I hope for the love of god this song gains popularity and I can hear it someday on KEXP.
next up on the line-up was Jenna Riot (from olympia), she made the announcement on stage that she will actually be leaving the northwest to move down to San Fran. I would try to save her a lot of time and more importantly money and advise her not to go down there. The only problem is that badass lesbians aren't privy to taking advice from white straight males age 18-35 that aren't exactly at the pinnacle of fashion, but hey, I can only help those who want to be helped. I can't wait to hear about the culture shock when she goes from paying olympia rent rates to san fran rates, hoooey! that's gonna be exciting. Anyhoo, back to the review. So, Jenna gets on stage after much searching around for one of those "adapters" to hook up a lap top to the sound system, Jenna finally rocked it. I was surprised by Jenna's energy on stage back stage she was kind of quiet and didn't really say much. On stage, Jenna was a firecracker. I think she did a good job of boosting the energy level of the room up a notch. This was when I noticed a lot of people making runs to the bar and slamming more drinks. Jenna's production was pretty solid I didn't get the scoop as to if she writes all her own beats, etc. or if she has someone help her out. I would like to know if anyone has that inside info.
Next up, the headliners: Diamond cut Diamond
DCD is a little new on the scene, but they have already played the paradox, the croc, chop suey and now the high dive. A lot of headway for a band that has only been gigging since august. After a few onstage sound adjustments DCD launched into their first song, the crowd as it were began to amass in a tight group right in front of the stage (as opposed to at the bar as with most NMM I have been to) , as the tempo picked up so did the dancing, all of the sudden, I looked around and I was the only one not dancing. I had to take a few steps back as I now felt a little awkward. DCD cruised through their set, not giving the audience a chance to relax. The drummer is the most entertaininf part of this band, j.miqueli is about 5 foot nothin' 90 lbs MAX, but she can hit the skins harder than most full grown men I know. (that came out wrong. double eww. I grossed myself out in my own explanation of my perverted connotation. This review is horrible)
All in all a solid night, the only thing lacking was more people. Where was everyone? aren't there any nadamucho regulars? who supports this shit? it's not JUST for the bands, it's for the scene, man. Get off your asses. What else are you gonna do on a monday night. These nights at the high dive should be accessible to everyone. Unlike the shows at the jewel box, the shows will actually start around 9pm and be over by 11:30ish. Why not go? That is still plenty of time to get sleep for that big day of work the next day.
