Alright... this might be a little premature but I've got to start. This is undoubtedly a great music year. Most of my favourite bands have released new albums, and most of them have been excellent. I have to start this list now, because I've come across a perfect, 10/10 album. I don't toss 10s around. The last album I deemed perfect was Modest Mouse's Moon & Antarctica in 2000. I'll likely change 2 through 10 for the rest of the year, but I can't imagine any other album matching The Faint's newest for tops on the list. So you heard it here first: 1. The Faint - Wet From Birth 10/10 2. Interpol - Antics 9/10 3. McLusky - The Only Difference... 9/10 4. Mouse on Mars - Radical Connector 9/10 5. Modest Mouse - Good News... 8/10 6. The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free 8/10 7. Patterson Hood - Killers and Stars 7/10 8. Savath and Savalas - Apropa't 7/10 9. TV on the Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes 7/10 10. Max Richter - The Blue Notebooks 7/10
The new Viktor Vaughn and Drive-By Truckers will likely make the list, bumping off a couple great albums. Think of these 7s as high sevens, scaled down in order to leave room on the top end for a few of the best albums I've heard the past couple years.

well kids, i'm sorry to report that 20K Streets Under the Sea will not be in the running for album of the year, as i'd hoped. this is a major disapointment, as their first album is among my fav ever, and their second is really good too. this one sucks huge, huge ass. absolutely horrible.

I second that... I couldn't get through to the end of that Marah album... actually... I don't think I made it to track 3... seemed to lack any kind of distinguishable sound to latch onto.
I'm starting to give up hope on the Old 97's newest, Drag It Up. I've loved previous releases (Too Far To Care in particular)... but they have abandoned most of everything they were good at on this new album... its lacking that Old 97s energy... the whole fight songs thing.
Again... I will reiterate... you all have to get your hands on the new Faint. I'm still resolute on the perfect score 24 hours later... 10 scores are easy to hand out... there is no doubt when you hear a perfect album... it runs 35 minutes... half an hour of energetic sexy synth rock.

I haven't heard the new Old 97s, but very interested to hear it based on your observations...it'll be a sad day to not like one of their albums. I actually somewhat dislike Rhett's Instigator solo album, and the last time I saw them, I was super close to the stage, and after being face to face with pretty boy Miller flipping his hair around, it just made me want to throw up in my mouth a little.

Bumblebeez and Snow Patrol are both great choices. Beasties is good but not quite up to level of these other albums we're talking about, at least in my eyes. Here's my top 5:
1) Modest Mouse - Good News... 2) The Hold Steady - Almost Killed Me 3) Bobby Bare Jr - From the End of Your Leash 4) McLusky - The Only Difference... 5) The Cheeps - The Cheeps

I have to disagree with snow patrol. I personally find nothing exciting about this band. Kind of boring. Anyway here is my top five within the last year.
1. The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree 2. All Night Radio - Spirit Stereo Frequency 3. Wilco - A Ghost is Born (This had to grow on me) 4. Modest Mouse - Good News 5. The Bronx - Self Titled 5. The Fuse - The Fisherman's Wife

what do you dig about the All Night Radio? i usually adore just about everything Sub Pop puts out (they've been on fire the past few years especially), but i haven't managed to get into it. sounds kinda like another SP band, Beachwood Sparks, who i also have mixed feelings on. maybe i should give ANR another listen.
don't know nuttin' about The Bronx or The Fuse. please edumacate me sir.

I'd also like to hear what you guys think about Icarus Line.... I've heard nothing but rave reviews... I downloaded it... maybe a slow grower... haven't given it much of a chance... somebody sell this band to me.

Okay..... At first I thought that All Night Radio was horrible. However, I gave it a few trys and have discovered that this is an amazing album. I am never good at putting music in their genre, but this sounds kind of like a psychadelic beach boys, and the after product are some pop gems. It is a great album to kick back and smoke a joint to.
The Bronx is a los angeles based rock-n-roll band. Simply put, this album slays!
I'm not sure why i put The Fuse on there...I think i was listening to it while I was posting and thought "yeah this is pretty good".
If you want to know more about The Icarus Line, google it, and you get like a million hits or something.....The Icarus Line is rock-n-roll....!

the Drive-by-Truckers are the best damn rock'n'roll band in the world. stones/skynyrd vein. they have three songwriters in the band, all of whom are great and compliment each other perfectly. they came to fame on their last album, "Southern Rock Opera," which was a double album concept album about the south as told by the history of lynyrd skynyrd. the follow up, "Decoration Day" is a classic classic-rock record that should be mentioned alongside Exile on Mainstreet and similarly revered classic rock records. 10/10. even my friends who don't normally dig "alt-country" or southern rock love these guys. last time i saw them live they played two nights, 3 hours each night and hardly repeated a song and it was all great. they also covered Carrol's "People Who Died" and Zevon's "Play it All Night Long" in stunning fashion. download "Let their be Rock," "Whiskey and Women," "Decoration Day," "Marry Me" and "Steve McQueen" to start.
