Here's a post from the old board. The Song That Shall Be Listened TO is whatever song I can't stop listen to at a given time, say like right now. Currently the STSBLT is the first track off Promise of Love by the American Analog Set, who conventiently are playing Graceland this evening. I might need a date so if anyone wants to go i can take as my plus one.

Ladies and Turds,

After a long hiatus, "The Song that Shall be Listened To" returns with "I Can't Wait," by the White Stripes. Not in several months have I listened to a song on repeat while playing air guitar for a good 20 minutes before going to bed, then listened to the song first thing when I got up.

On another note, White Stripes' "White Blood Cells" may be album of the year. 9/10, and their best work.

I don't listen to the Bright Eyes tune I was referring to in this post from the old skool nada msg board as it just seems to overwrought, but the words are still amazing despite the melodrammatic delivery, which Conor shed before last year's fan-fuckingtastic Lifted Or..........

Ash out

The song that shall be listened to is now "Kathy With a K's Song," by Bright Eyes. Lyrics below. Gives me goose bumps.
Love is real
it is not
just in novels or the movies
it is fact
and it is standing here right in front of you
so if you open your eyes
what a sweet discovery
there is hope, there is joy, and there is acceptance
so now let all the light that collects on your plants
keep you warm
make you smile
and I will be there with this pen in my hand to record
all the while
you'll be laughing so loud
that the house would shake with sound
and everything would be as new as the day it was found.

Love is real
it is not just in long distance commercials
or something that you thought you felt back in high school
so I will turn
black and white
become that horoscope you're reading
it predicts something good is on it's way
and then I'll send you the world green and blue
in a box in the mail
you can open it up
hold it right in your hand and be glad that it's there
and be glad that you're there
you can feel all the knots in your stomach start to untie
and suddenly it's not so hard to say you're allright.

Love is real
it is not
just in poetry and stories
it is truth
and it will follow you
everywhere you go from now on
so if you would just cast off your doubt
then your lips would answer for you
oh my darling, when you smile
it is like a song
and I can hear it now.

This is Paul. Matt had me go through old msg boards and look for anything he said that was remotely interesting so he doesn't have to think up new stuff for this one. Here's the original post and a few to follow on the "SOngs that shall be listined too" thread. it was 9/22/00.

There is always one song that should be being listened to at any given time. Which isn't to say you shouldn't be listening to other songs during the "song that should be listened to"'s reign. It simply means that there is one song you should be listening to the most at any given time. It is the song you should listen to before bed and when you get up and by yourself and with other people and through your headphones. Since I am the only person qualified to select the "song that shall be listened to," this thread will serve more as a reference for all of you. Simply visit this board each day, and you will learn whether there is a new song you should be listening to, or whether the song that shall be listened to has temporarily remained the same. Sometimes songs remain "to be listened to" for long periods of time, other times they are gone w/in a couple of days. Songs sometimes cease being the song to be listened to and then regain the honor at a later date. Its all very confusing how this works, so you'll just have to trust me and do as your told. I'm giving you a list of former songs that were at one time the song to be listened to. This of course is to serve as a reference, not to encourage you to listen to these songs as "the song that shall be listened to." There is only one "song that shall be listened to" at any given time, and these are songs that have formerly held the honor. You may listen to these songs, of course, but they are in no way to be misconstrued as the current song that shall be listened to. These songs percievably may, once again, at a later date, be "the song that shall be listened to." Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Current song to be listening to "Else - Built to Spill." It makes me cry.

Former songs to be listened to
- Sapphire Jewel - Trailer Bride
- Virginia Reel Around the Fountain - Built to Spill version
- Papa Was a Rodeo - The Magnetic Fields
- Trailer Trash - Modest Mouse
- Phobia - Outkast
- Synthesizer - Outkast
- When we Two Parted - The Afghan Whigs
- Tomorrow Wendy - Concrete Blonde version

The song that shall be listened to is definitely, definitely, "Lioness" by Los Halos, who, btw, are the best band in the world.

Now if you'll excuse me I must go polish my award for "most prolific use of the comma" placard.

I have not heard your "song".  Nevertheless, I deem your "song" unworthy of such a "title" and instead promote my "song" to replace yours as "the song that shall be listened to".  That "song" would be "Red Right Ankle" by "The Decemberists".  "Asshole".

Check that.... the song that better be listened to is Death Cab For Cutie's Tiny Vessels.... and if that isn't it it's surely the title track off their new album Transatlanticism.

Sybil.... you ought to check out my semicolon action sometime.  It puts Matt's use of commas to shame.

Outkast surely has the largest set of wobblers to have the gall to be a known rap band to release above said pop song.  That song should definately be listened to.

i've been remiss in posting "the song that shall be listened to." the following tracks have held that honor with such force over the past month or two to have been played as m uch as 25 times a day.

Terrible Sunrise - Bobby Bare Jr
The best coke song ever. Bobby is a fucking genius.

Jet Plane to Japan - Fear of Little Men
This song is over 6 minutes but still somehow manages to be too short. Love the Pixies-esque guitar and the lyrics are stellar.

Gone Too Long - Federation X
"And later on, later on we will fiiight....."

The Faint - How Could I Forget
The muted bass line reminds me of standing outside a techno dive back in the late 90s, when raves were all the rage... As if the sound is being restrained by a brick wall... like there's a party going on in there that I want no part of... I used to piss off early, grab a pizza and sit on the front steps listening to the thump and rumble emanating from the building... I'd take off because I couldn't cope with the empty, degenerate behavior inside... this is perfectly captured by the lyrics in this song: "how could I forget the waste of breath... of course I do remember... all the things you said were pointless"
