Today I finally listened to their new album on streaming audio at work. I wanted to pee on my computer to put out the flames of suck, but I was afraid to electrocute myself.

DAMN YOU, OLD 97s!!!

Sonja,

I streamed it a while back as well and found myself yawning at work even more than usual. Bums me out. Curious to get A-Law's opinion. Oh and Ash told me you ticked off another year recently, but I was tied up the night you celebrated. Next time I see you, you can collect your birthday drink. Because that is what birthdays are for right?

holy fuck does the new Old 97s album suck balls. i'm 6 tracks through on the headphones and am about to barf. totally bland and uninspired. its like Fight Songs outtakes. i can't even finish it. this makes me incredibly sad.

it also, by comparison, makes the new marah album not seem like such a disapointment.

For the last time, Fight Songs was a good album. Drag it Up, on the other hand......"is not."

I was hoping I was missing something...  I had the same impressions when I tried listening to it.... like I said before... they have abandoned everything they were good at.... they're going for brooding moody music... sort of in the calexico or califone vein... but not nearly as good... the sad bastard thing does not work for them.

Fight Songs is a lot better than Drag it Up, clearly. what i was pointing out is that Fight Songs marked a clear shift towards poppier, radio-friendly type tunes with lots of fancy production. which isn't always a bad thing. that recipe worked on many songs on Fight Songs, others sound trite and ridiculous and embarassing. Drag it Up has the same problem as Fight Songs, but its just one of many, and it doesn't have any of its strengths.

Fight Songs - 6.5/10
Drag it Up - 4/10
