Comedian Mitch Hedberg Dead
Rick Ellis, Staff Writer

POSTED: 1:48 pm CST March 31, 2005
UPDATED: 1:57 pm CST March 31, 2005

Comedian Mitch Hedberg has died at the age of 37.

A spokesman for Hedberg confirmed the death Thursday afternoon, but declined to provide additional details.

Hedberg began his stand-up career in South Florida, but soon moved to Seattle, where he joined that city's thriving comedy scene. His first television appearance was on MTV's "Comikaze," a role he won by reportedly unexpectedly walking into the booking office and demanding to be booked onto the show.

A 1996 appearance at the famed Just For Laughs Montreal International Comedy Festival won him both a studio development deal and a guest appearance on "The Late Show With David Letterman." The following year he won the grand prize at the Seattle Comedy Competition.

Since then, Hedberg has written, directed and starred in his own independent feature called "Los Enchiladas!" which premiered at Sundance. He had signed a development deal with Fox Television and had recently completed a reality show pilot for MTV. He has also made a number of appearances on Comedy Central, most recently on the animated series "Shorties Watchin' Shorties." He was also a frequent guest on the Howard Stern radio show.

In a recent interview with Recoilmag.com, Hedberg admitted that he had mixed feelings about his success. "Right now, I'm at a point where I'm working constantly, I make great money, and everything is fine," Hedberg said. "I live comfortably and if I live this way the rest of my life, I can't say that I'd be a failure. But yet you still feel like you can do more, so I don't know what that is. I guess I'd like to be a household name."

Doesn't look like it. Unless his mom is in on it: "Mitch presented a lot of challenges, but a lot of opportunities for traveling that we wouldn't have otherwise had, and he had a heart of gold," his mother said. "He was a brilliant comic and a wonderful person."

I like this line. He once said he wasn't a household name because all his fans lived in apartments.

And apparently he was a bit of a junkie:

According to an article published in the Los Angeles Times in 2003, Hedberg spent two and a half days in jail, and six weeks in a hospital bed, following his arrest in May of that year for felony heroin possession. But Hedberg said he was arrested for "possession of paraphernalia and pills and things like that. My actual bust was minor. I got a misdemeanor. People used that bust to try and prove that I was busted for having, like, a kilo of heroin on me."

I'm sad he passed before his time, but considering everytime you saw him he looked completely fucked up and half-dead, I don't think it's a surprise.............
