I think compilation albums on best of lists are cheesy.  I certainly didn't agree w/ O Brother either.   That's all I gots to say about this.

Graham and I have personal (and slightly painful) experience with the top ten cunundrum (is that spelled right?).  And sadly it almost came to blows, because well, I was being a snobby ass. (I hope all is now forgiven Graham!)

But as we learned spending one cold december many years ago arguing over whether "Things Fall Apart" by the Roots or "Chronic 2000" by Dre was better, we came to the conclusion that to make a good top 10, you need some time.  A little processing, and some money so you can actually buy all the CD's that you couldn't afford the previous year but have to buy now because all of you friends are saying "YOU DON'T OWN THE NEW ARCADE FIRE YET" and you're all "C'mon guys... I'm broke... I need money... I don't even have Outkast's album yet, and that was out in 2003..."

It's a sad fate of reality, but who has the money to hear even the very best of the year.  You always end up spending half of your money on old faithful's and another decent portion on stuff that just plain didn't turn out so well (insert The Thrill's last two releases here).

But with that, I give you my current January top 5, which is yes quite a bit different than my December top 5, and will undoubtedly be quite different from my February and March top 5's of 2004.

1) Brian Wilson - Smile
This my friends is the one album that I know will never move from this spot on the list... years and time will show where it stands on the infamous and ever changing ALL TIME list, but I cannot speak of that now, but merely listen in bliss.
2) Dungen - Ta Det Lugnt
Scandanavian psychodelic rock.  Can't understand a word the dude says...  and I don't care.
3) Panda Bear - Young Prayer
Not much to say... won't be to everyone's liking, but I love it.
4)  Madvillain - Madvillainy
Hip hop album of the year...
5) The Futureheads - The Futureheads.

Albums I've not heard yet that could wreak havok upon the above list: Mirah, Arcade Fire, Fiery Furnaces, Animal Collective, Bjork, Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, Concretes and god only knows what else...

I'm talking to much now... I'm a-gonna go...

so here it is march and i still haven't put up the results of fav albums of 2004. should i publish it as an article or just post it here? it turned out really good - most participants we've ever had and a really good list. it is, however, almost april.

comments from the peanut gallery?
