In an attempt to post the nerdiest thread ever, I'm putting forth the following question:

Which type of book do you prefer, hardcover or paperback?

I'm trying to decide if I want to publish my next novel in hardcover, so there is a practical side to all of this. All suggestions and thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanking you in advance,

Todd

I greatly prefer paperback. I hardly ever buy anything in hardback because it costs so much more and I read too fast to spend too much on a book.

Also, I mostly read in bed, and paperbacks are easier to hold with one hand and aren't as heavy.

one thing i can say for sure is that i hate those paper sleeves that come on hard cover books. first thing i do when i get hard cover books is rip them off and throw them away.

I tend to prefer hardback books, but I also factor in a harsh judgement of the books cover.  Yes, I do judge a book by its cover.  If the hardcover looks lame, I go for paperback.

If it has an "Oprah Book Club" label, I excercise enourmous amounts of caution.  Check the back, if the book description involves any of the following words, "womanhood" "manhood" "motherhood" (actually any word ending "-hood") "coming of age" avoid at all cost.  Actually if it's got Oprah on the cover, you're probably safer passing over it completely.  The risk is too great.

I'm still waiting for Okay Player to get their own book club seal smacked down on all your favorite New York Times best sellers.

actually, I'd be ok with a book description including the words "da hood."  But I doubt that Oprah'd ever stick her label on those books.

by your "coming of age" rule you'd probably have ruled out Catcher in the Rye, the Graduation, and A Separate Peace, which would have been a totally silly move.

do you like books about "hood"-lums, or people that have been "hood"-winked?

Provided that they don't bear an Oprah Book Club logo on the front....  so those are all cool...

I took a course called Contemporary World Fiction, and nearly all the books were "coming of age tales" and all sucked.  "Dreams of My Russian Summer" was about the most pretentious piece of crap I've ever read, and "Rule of the Bone" was just a Salinger knock off that made it all to clear that the Rusell Banks was over the hill in his pathetic attempt to write a first person narrative from a 14 year olds perspective.

I would prefer a coming of age tale that involved hoodlums getting hoodwinked myself...  er... nevermind...

There's tons of good "coming of age books."

Eddie's Bastard, Catcher in the Rye and Red Sky at Morning are three of my favorites.  What a craptastic rule.

I guess I like paperbacks but not the tiny ones.  The bigs ones with the nice cover art and stuff.

Let me say that none of the cited books in defense of coming-of-age novels bear the Oprah book club logo, which was part of my general rule...
In no way did I intend to bash coming of age themes as a whole, just the ones that Oprah picks.

Well, this didn't answer any questions. I made the executive decision, paperback it is. I prefer it, actually. For real. I do. Really.
