So I'm reading a book. It's called the Davinci Code, you might have heard of it. It seems pretty neat.
Anyone else read it?

I did. I really liked it. I then read Angels and Demons and Digital Fortress. Then I bought books *about* The DaVinci Code and read them. Then I actually (don't laugh) went to this church book group every Thursday for a few weeks when they were studying this book. I just wanted to see what actual religious people thought (they were pretty cool, by the way.)
I don't think it's the best book ever or really reveals startling information that wasn't previously known. I think it disseminated that information to a generation and demographic of people that were largely ignorant on the subjects discussed in the book. I also thought it was a book that provided a topic of discussion and a jumping off point to learn more and to stimulate conversation.
All in all, I liked it. I also liked the others which are very similar but about different topics. I can loan them to you, if you like.
What'd you think, Matt?

I liked it a lot. I don't normally get into these type of books normally and basically started reading for lack of anything else to read in the house. I thought religious groups that found it offensive were funny because the book is a novel that presents real theories that are out there, but it is still nonetheless a mystery. I haven't heard anyone getting pissed about the Henry VIII historical novel I read and theories presented there.
Anyways, I actually like Angels and Demons a little better.

the last half of the Davinci Code didn't quite live up to the fantastic first half (it got too mired in pages of historical background instead of telling the story and the ending was a bummer), but still a great read.

The best part of the da vinci code was the historical/art stuff. I should read more of the books about that, because the story was eh. Which reminds me - sonja? can I borrow your christmas present?

that stuff was very interesting to be sure, i just didn't like later in the book when the author stopped doing a good job of having the characters unveil the historical stuff as the story progressed, and instead just had them go into pages of historical background that sounded like the could have been coming from one of several characters or the author himself. for the most part i thought he did a good job, but in the second half it was a little clunkier. also, for those who really liked the historical stuff in the Davinci Code, you should check out Art Bell - http://www.radideo.com/hosts/artbell.htm.

For all you 'Vinci code lovahs out there... You might check out Mary Doria Russell's books. The Sparrow and Children of God are both really interesting combinations of philosophical science fiction and religion with a Jesuit Priest as the lead. They're really compelling. FYI. Russell also has a new book out this year called Thread of Grace which is about walrd war II and is not science fiction. I'm about to start it but can't speak to it directly yet.

I like Angels and Demons better than Da Vinci Code. If you like these kinds of books, you might wanna check out Rule of Four. It's also a nice book.
