Bumbershoot Preview

Monday, September 7

Monday is my birthday, so I'm hoping it's easy for me to see all of the bands on my 2009 Bumbershoot schedule. You can help out by avoiding these particular shows, OK?

I mean, why would you want to spend your Labor Day at the Seattle Center anyway? Bumbershoot has become a corporate cheesefest. This year tickets are $50 per day and sponsors include "Samsung Mobile," "Starbucks," and "Rockstar Energy Drink."

So even if you examine the 30 plus acts performing on Monday, you won't be able to find  some genuinely. . .

You must have missed me Facebook diatribe about how "unfunny" Patton Oswalt's "My Weakness is Strong" special on Comedy Central was.

Different strokes.

Seriously? Jason Webley?

Here, I edited that section for increased accuracy for you:

Jason Webley
It's a miracle Seattle's own Jason Webley hasn't become a super star gets any gigs at all. Usually just performing with an accordion and vocals "vocals", the guy is incredibly talented and entertaining a complete hack whom most people instantly mistake for a pathetic attempt at a Tom Waits impersonator who stopped listening to Tom Waits after one time through Frank's Wild Years. He started by busking, but worked up a routine strong annoying enough to take on tour break the will of enough booking agents to let him play the beginnings of some mid-week bills and release albums, which is particularly impressive in this age when pretty much anyone can buy a copy of GarageBand and pay someone to print some CDs. You heard it here first, I predict the guy is about to get some type of big break yet another annual booking at Bumbershoot!

True Mathew, true. Different strokes for different folks. That Comedians of Comedy special was pretty damn hilarious, though. I wouldn't say I necessarily have "sophisticated" taste when it comes to comedy.

Regarding Webley: On second thought, maybe he won't "blow up" and up back on the streets, hustling for money. HA!

UPDATE. Jason Webley put on a fun, crowd-participation-filled performance. His music's a little boring, but the guy sure can engage a crowd. He probably won't become famous, but it was an entertaining way to spend an hour.
