Because when I had my dumbass little trivia contest, you copped out with some goofy excuse about not being eligible or something and didn't play, darling.
Some boys played and they won. Two have received their prizes and the rest think I've forgotten them. At least one guy is correct. The absolute best way to actually receive a mix CD from me is to make one of your own, whatever stuff you're into or any music that you actually produce on your own (or with a band) and send it to:
Matt Brown 2549 E. Alta Vista St. Tucson, AZ 85716
Anywhere from a week to two years later, you will receive a CD or cassette from me that is 85% guaranteed to blow your fuckin' doors off. That's basically how I've been amusing myself since I first made Hal a mixtape back in 1985, holding a cheap microphone up to the left speaker of my parent's stereo and taping records...

Oh, I got confused because you were promising mixed tapes to multiple people. I thought the contest was for the FIRST person who emailed or posted the correct answer to be the winner.
Hmmm, my mistake.
You need to have a contest where I might actually be able to win. I'm not as much nerdy as the rest of you.

Hey, I'm totally nerdy. I'm not denying that. I feel as though my nerdiness is written across my forehead....and I also love nerds. They're my favorite people.
What I'm *saying* is....I'm not as nerdy "musically". I wish I were.

Sorry for the confusion, but I was just taking a cheap shot at your expense.

Please do, and I'll accept any cheap shots gratefully. Especially if it's vodka. Ha.

I wonder if, in all the critical corpse-kicking that's bound to follow this ugly story, if we'll see an after-the-fact upswing in critics' opions of Heatmiser. My own opinion - E.S. had his maudlin excesses reined in nicely by Neil Gust and company. "Mic City Sons" is tighter, more focused and more consistently tuneful than any of Elliot's solo albums. Sorry, Elliot.
And speaking of Gust, people have yet to give him any props for his lyrics. In the context of a noisy post-punk band, writing songs about gay crushes and anonymous gay sex was, I think, pretty radical. I think because of those songs I have a better undertstanding of the hell people like him have to go through in their '20s.
The whole thing has still got me bummed . . there ought to be a seven-day waiting period for suicide. So many people have checked out just because they were in a bad mood they thought would never end.

I was down at the Jambox (in Queen Anne) the other night, and judging by what I heard walking down the hall, at least three local bands are taking a hack at Elliot Smith covers. I heard the first song on XO and one from Roman Candle. Good luck, kids, those changes are a bitch!
