Recently I've been kind of interested in creating (harsh?) noise music, but, at the risk of sounding stupid, I'm not too clear on how I would even go about doing so. I know there are many possible approaches, but does anyone have any suggestions? Not knowing what to do, it's difficult to just jump in and make that sort of sound.

Your question is a bit vague for me to give you a detailed answer, but since you aperently have little or no experience recording, a great place to start would be to check out the book "The Recording Engineers Handbook". This is were I started when I began learning how to record. It should start you off in the right direction. Here is a link to the book...
