Two things:

1. From Frank Black's Website on 1/4/04 -

For years, when asked if and when the Pixies would get back together, my stock answer would be : "When pigs fly." Then this happened :

It was a warm September day and in the midst of the afternoon's heat came a loud whining engine noise from above. This occurs quite often during the warm months. It's usually a sea plane or a helicopter; both of which fly low in these parts. Normally, when this happens, the engine sound comes and goes rather quickly. But this time, I wasn't experiencing the usual doppler effect; you know, the high pitch sound of the engine as the air craft approaches, followed by a lower pitch sound as it moves away.

This sound was different; it seemed to linger over the house at an even pitch. After more than a few seconds of this, I went outside to investigate and there, seemingly hovering above my house, was the Goodyear blimp. It lumbered along slowly and was so low in the sky I could see the people in the gondola underneath. It looked like a giant pig, not unlike the mammoth floating pig that Pink Floyd had tethered to a large building in London years ago. I'd see it whenever I took the train out to Wandsworth.

Neither the blimp nor the Pink Floyd pig had wings. Still, they floated in air. And so, now, I ask myself : can pigs fly?

2. From Billboard.com (1/14/04):

As expected, organizers have officially confirmed that Radiohead and the Pixies will perform on the first day of the fifth Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, to be held May 1-2 in Indio, Calif. Pioneering German rock act Kraftwerk will also play on May 1. As first reported here, the lineup will also feature Air, Prefuse 73, the Thrills and Electric Six, plus the newly added Sahara Hotnights and the (International) Noise Conspiracy.

The Pixies will be playing their first show since abruptly disbanding in 1993. It is unknown if all four original members -- guitarists Frank Black and Joey Santiago, bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering -- will be present, or if the show will dovetail into a tour or new recording project.

If there's any justice in the world, Black Francis will call the new album "Pigs Fly", just like the Eagles and "Hell Freezes Over". That would be so totally.

Ahh the sounds of The Pixies and the aroma of thousands of dirty dirty hippies.

Why can't they just play Chop Suey or something?  Sheesh.

You're all welcome at my crib, for this or any event involving Black Francis. The only downside is that my girlfriend and I only have room in my sultan-size, industrial strength waterbed for Sonja, Snizz, A-Law and Snizz's wife.

Ashworth, Paul Broderson and the rest of the fucking multiple personality disorder have to crash in a tent in my backyard! I've got a can of coyote repellent for ya, chief...

I'm sorry. I was just kidding... I don't have room in my bed for Snizz and A-Law. Coachella is about eight hours from here - not too bad for a road trip. If you're at all serious, we can make this shit work...

The greatest rock festival was obviously Monsters of Rock featuring Judas Priest, Van Halen and Triumph.

i'm too broke to pay for shows in seattle or buy gas money to olympia, much less organize a road trip to cali (or vancouver, even).

however, as a small token of appreciation for his unparalleled excellence on all fronts, i'm getting Fisher a press and photo pass to Coachella so he can see the whole thing free with his girl while they're spending 6 months down there in the desert.

Reunited Pixies to take main stage at Bumbershoot

By Tina Potterf

The Pixies, often credited with putting alternative rock (excellent alt-rock, that is) on the map in the late 1980s, are reunited and coming to Seattle.

The Pixies and hip-hop artist Nas are the first main-stage acts announced for this year's Bumbershoot, the arts and music festival at Seattle Center on Labor Day weekend. Nas performs Sept. 5, while the Pixies take the stage on Labor Day, Sept. 6. Other confirmed artists include Koko Taylor, Brother Ali and Harvey Pekar.

Since word got out earlier this year of a possible Pixies reunion, fans of the influential band no doubt rejoiced that one of the finest bands of intelligent (and danceable) alternative rock was back in the fold.

According to the band's Web site, frontman Frank Black (aka Black Francis), guitarist Joey Santiago, bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering are "holed up in a Southern California rehearsal space" for the first time since the Pixies went their separate ways more than a decade ago. Next month, the band cited as influences on such groups as Pearl Jam and Nirvana embarks on an 11-city "warm-up" tour that includes a stint as co-headliners of the huge Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on May 1 (shows in Spokane, Boise and Eugene reportedly sold out in minutes).

Info: www.bumbershoot.org. Starting March 24, single-day tickets are $15 until Aug. 27, then $25 per day.

A-Law - you know how you said you could do the groundwork getting our bumbershoot press passes processed again this year since last year i forgot after we had them for the 4 years prior? that would be swell. remind me about getting you the info for Doug Caravocchi, who is hopefully still the festivals pr guy.

BTW -

I assume everyone already knows that the Pixies reunion is, hands down, the most important musical occurrence of our lifetimes (anyone under 30). I further assume that everyone knows that despite the band's Bumbershoot appearance happening in the massively-oversized memorial stadium that getting into Bumbershoot and getting yourself a pink wristband the day they perform is going to be a nightmare unless you arrive the moment the festival opens (there are at least 5 times as many people in the greater Seattle area that want to "finally see the pixies" as will fit in memorial stadium, fyi). I even further assume that anyone who's as poor as me, and therefore won't get to see the GREATEST BAND EVER play until Bumbershoot will make the effort to be there.
