What's Wrong with this Picture? Brooks & Dunn Make the Cover of Country Magazine, Creep Out Reader
Odds & Ends
By Dan Lurie
Tuesday, 22 July 2008

brooks_and_dunnLongtime reader Aaron Semer stopped by the office recently to drop off this thought-provoking issue of Country Magazine.

The cover of the periodical – which was found on an end table inside Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center – disturbed Aaron greatly, but he wasn't exactly sure why, so he decided to hand it over to us for further inspection.

This turned out to be a wise move, as it took our experts just under three hours to determine the real problem with the magazine's cover.

If you take a close look at Ronnie Dunn (the charming fellow on the left), you'll notice his beard is completely disproportionate to his hair. In fact, they're of two distinctly different follicular genres.

Dunn's unfortunate condition is the direct result of improper management of the Norelco Maverick Beard Trimmer. You see, he clearly has his Maverick locked in on the number 7 setting. Any knowledgeable beard groomer knows that this is too high of a setting, thus too thick of a beard to accompany such a slick, well-coifed hairstyle.

Promote This - A Kid Named Paul on a Kid Named Thompson
Promote This, Beeyatch

Well, actually THREE kids, but whatever.A Kid Named Thompson
I Want To Wake Up
Self-released, 2007

A Kid Named Thompson brings to the collective rock table a uniquely Texas-punk meets emo-core CD that delivers the goods. I Want to Wake Up features quality production and thoughtful lyrics backed by a three piece that sounds like they’ve been around, although I suspect these Texas kids are new to the rock game.

The lyrics have the polish that reflects the agility of an Xbox generation eager to add to the already crowded room that holds Emo bands in the highest regard. I distinctly hear the talent and agility, but I also hear reflections of Sunny Day Real Estate arm wrestling with Motion City Soundtrack in the back-stage parking lot at a Van’s Warped Tour show in SoCal.

Peep P-Town, Yo: A Quick Update on the Portland Music Scene
Peep P-Town: A Quick Look at the Portland Music Scene

pbands_thumb Sometimes it's hard to get above the clouds to see the rest of the world when you exist in such a musical circus like Portland, Oregon.

Not to exaggerate things, but thousands of bands and musicians are packed into this little-big city and I’m continually astonished that there seems to be enough room for everyone to coexist. It's definitely cool to look around and feel as if you're in the middle of an all-star film, like Ocean's Eleven, where something big seems to be going on nearly every weekend.

You already know the heavy-hitters like the Dandy Warhols, the Decemberists, the Shins, and the other kids on the block like Dolorean, the Thermals, Blitzen Trapper, Stars of Track and Field, and Viva Voce to name a few. Then there are recent transplants like Spoon's Britt Daniel and Death Cab's Chris Walla.

A Stylish Cape Never Goes out of Style
Q & A With Dave Vanian of The Damned
By Joseph Vallejos

Nada Mucho: How is the Grave Disorder tour different from those early tours?
David Vanian: I am answering this just after the New York City attack so I don't really know what to say to this one; before September 11th I would have said it’s a culmination of 25 years of hard work, now I feel like the ground has been kicked out from under me. We will all see what unfolds together. Those events are tainting everything right now. It’s a very difficult time for everyone.
