The Pixies are also excellent spelunkers. The Intermittent Rock Report
June 2004
By Adam Lawrence, Music Editor

Hola amigos. I know it’s been a while since I rapped at ya, but things have been shittier than Michael Jackson’s holding cell for ol’ A-Law in the last few months. One shining beam through the clouds, however, was the recent news that the legendary Pixies will headline this year’s Bumbershoot Festival.

As a result, I’ve been working on my list of Top 10 Dream Bumbershoot Headliners. The criteria are simple: 1) each entry has to be a band I’ve never seen live and, 2) they all have be groups I’d give body parts to see. I’m leaving out some no-brainers, like Nirvana and the Beatles, but here goes:

In light of the recent passing of Fred “Rerun” Berry, I thought I’d pay tribute to the music industry’s version of the rerun, namely the Greatest Hits collection. I delved into my personal CD collection and pulled out my favorite career-spanning, be-all-end-all retrospectives. Click below to find out what my top choices are.

Gary Coleman just after his return from Rwanda. The Intermittent Rock Report
October 2003

I’ve had a hell of a couple months. I started school again, I had to put my cat, Janis, to sleep, Johnny Cash died, and Gary Coleman lost the California recall. Time to put the past behind me and get back to work.

I missed out on telling you about several exciting new releases since late August. Outkast put out Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, an uneven although entertaining double album. Emmylou Harris followed up Grammy nominated Red Dirt Girl with Stumble Into Grace. Indie favorites Raveonettes and Kings Of Leon unleashed their highly anticipated full length debuts. New Mexico’s Handsome Family continued their string of excellent albums with Singing Bones. Sadly, Rod Stewart released another album of “standards.” Hey, Rod, leave those to Tony Bennett and go listen to Every Picture Tells A Story.

Anyway, what’s done is done, and now it’s time to look…TO THE FUTURE!

Boy, I’m glad I put that “intermittent” clause in my contract.

My 10-year high school reunion was a couple weeks back. While this may not have anything to do with music, the nostalgia factor ran high. I decided to check out the albums that came out that year, and sure enough, there were plenty of great ones now officially considered timeless. Take a look:

Nirvana - In Utero
Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville
Uncle Tupleo - Anodyne
PJ Harvey - Rid Of Me
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen

Greetings, loyal followers. The biggest music news of the past week was the MTV Video Music Award nominations. Dominating the list are Missy Elliot and Eminem (big surprise). Optimistically, there's a strong showing from Coldplay, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Johnny Cash. Let's hear it for the Man In Black, whose "Hurt" video reduces even the most stoic people to tears, especially now that his wife June has gone to the big Hootenanny in the sky. Winners announced August 28.

New Releases 7/29

It's a thin week for new albums, with just as many to ridicule as there are to anticipate. It's been a while since Blue Rodeo made a buzz, but last year's Palace of Gold was celebrated
