#ICYMI: Broken Social Scene’s Harmonious, Familial Vibe

Canadian musical conglomerate Broken Social Scene was one of my “gateway bands” into indie rock music back in the early 2000s, a time when most popular rock hits seemed to all be some bizarre amalgamation of nu-metal and scream. Following a seven year hiatus following their last release, Forgiveness Rock Record, the band is back on tour promoting their new album Hug of Thunder.
When they performed at Seattle’s Neptune Theatre in October, the set list included a healthy mix of old and new material. The show kicked off with “KC Accidental” a perfect opener number since the nature of the song plays out like one big crescendo to the rest of the setlist. The song utilized epic soaring guitar riffs and a rolling, yet crashing percussion scheme worthy of praise by any rock fan.
Unlike most traditional band formats, Broken Social Scene had at least eight members on stage, which could be considered a “light” arrangement for the band. While it might seem overkill to have this many musicians on stage, the number of instruments and musicians only added to the depth and variety of sound. Not once did it occur that there was any sign of musical clash.
Other favorites for the sold-out crowd included “7/4 Shoreline”, “Cause=Time”, and “Protest song” an upbeat, pop-driven rock anthem on Hug of Thunder.
What stood out to me the most was the band’s harmony, and I’m not just talking about sonically. This band feels like a family, plain and simple.
Additionally, lead singer Kevin Drew is not shy about sharing his feelings between songs about ideas such as togetherness and helping each other out during hard times. To see a band so enthusiastic about sharing positivity, not only with each other but with their fans, is always a heartwarming sign. It adds a level of authenticity to the music that makes it that much more enjoyable to be a part of.
