Music Icon Johnny CashNada Mucho mourns the death of Johnny Cash, The Man In Black, who died last Friday morning in Nashville. He was 71. Cash had battled respiratory problems as a result of complications from diabetes for several years. His wife, June Carter Cash, preceded him in death last May.

Cash’s talent was visible once more to the younger generations after his cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” gained immense popularity following the release of his last album, American IV: The Man Comes Around. “Hurt” was nominated for six 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, winning only one for Best Cinematography. Cash expected to attend the award presentation, but was admitted to the hospital with a stomach ailment just days earlier.

Cash’s compassion for the common man, including convicted criminals, was captured by songs such as “I Walk The Line,” “Ring of Fire,” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” He wrote in his 1997 autobiography that he tried to speak for “voices that were ignored or even suppressed in the entertainment media, not to mention the political and educational establishments.” He also explained that his iconic black clothing was a symbol of the downtrodden.

Cash leaves this world the winner of 11 Grammys and more than 70 albums released. Next time you’re near a jukebox, drop in a quarter and say goodbye the way he would have wanted you to. We know we will.Cash ponders mortality and the nature of Man.
