In what is promising to be the most impressive succession of festivals
in the arts and music industry this year, Portland’s younger, hipper
Music Fest Northwest returns this year with an impressive array of
talent. This year’s festival (Sept. 7-9) follows Bumbershoot’s stellar
Labor Day weekend long extravaganza with an impressive array of talent,
culled from the wet woods of the Northwest and lands beyond. While Bumbershoot has the arts festival market cornered for diversity and grandeur (this year’s lineup is an impressive return to form), Music Fest NW is boasting the kind of pound for pound ‘music for the money’ that a festival the size of Bumbershoot can’t dream to accommodate. If Bumbershoot simply hasn’t sated your festival needs, or has simply gotten far too mind-blowingly beyond scope in all it encompasses – just hop on I-5 and head southward for a relentless tour-de-force of intimate performances and stellar venues. Nationally renowned acts such as The Black Keys, The Dandy Warhols, and Brian Jonestown Massacre will be on hand to kick start festivities on Thursday evening. On Friday, September 8, in what promises to be the marquee triple threat of the festival, the innovative and critically acclaimed Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players will charm the audience at the Crystal Ballroom before Stephen Malkmus co-headlines with soul mates The Silver Jews. Saturday in the same venue, Britt Daniel, fresh off Spoon’s performance at Bumbershoot, will ply his songs sans band in what should be an intriguing solo set, followed by local powerhouse Helio Sequence. Up and coming Portland group Antlerand will take the stage Saturday at Midnight at The Fez Ballroom, along with bands Hypatia Lake, Mountain Corn, Blitzen Trapper, and Climber. All told, the festival will feature 156 acts spread over 3 days at 17 different venues. If you can’t find something for your money’s worth in this lineup then your money ain’t worth the paper it’s printed on. A mere $35 gets you a wrist band for all three days and access to all events. Tickets are also available on a show by show basis for individual venues. Check the listings and venues for tickets to individual shows. The ever-fashionable Portland publication Willamette Week is yet again spearheading organization and sponsorship. Nada Mucho is sending part time Nada-scribes Dominic Aulisio and Dan Lurie (both singer/songwriters of Seattle band Solyoni) to the festival this year to fraternize, chit chat, yick yack, glad hand, press palm, high five, hobnob, rub elbow, buddy up, shuck and jive, truck with, coalesce, mix it up, gadabout, mingle, and schmoose with some of the bigger success stories of the Northwest Music scene. Among the artists confirmed are: The Dandy Warhols, Brian Jonestown Massacre (The Dandys and BJM will be playing on the same night at The Crystal Ballroom on September 7th), The Black Keys, Dead Moon, Helio Sequence, Britt Daniel of Spoon, The Silver Jews, Stephen Malkmus (The Silver Jews and Stephen Malkmus will be playing on the same night at The Crystal Ballroom on September 8th), The Melvins, Sunset Valley, Lifesavas, Little Brother, M-1 of Dead Prez, Viva Voce, Jeremy Enigk, Centro-Matic, Eric Bachmann, Kristin Hersh, Fall of Troy, Talkdemonic, Stars of Track and Field, Crosstide, Swords (last show), and Little Steven’s Underground Garage Tour with The Zombies, The Woggles, The Mooney Suzuzki, and Phantom Planet. Please keep checking back to our website as we will be updating it with bands that are confirmed for the festival. Wristbands are on sale at Ticketswest, Music Millennium, Jackpot Records, Ozone Records, 360 Vinyl, and at The Willamette Week offices. Wristbands are $35 and will gain entry into all events with capacity permitting. For further info, including a full lineup listing, venue maps, and schedule, not to mention amusing/disturbing You Tube clips of Tanya Harding and Rowdy Roddy Piper, visit: www.musicfestnw.com/2006 Just monkey around on the sidebar a bit. You’ll find all the pertinent info. (0) Comments |
