KLED: Farm Rock, Human Props & Vibrating Buttholes
Music
By Milo Anderson
Wednesday, 12 December 2007

kled_thumb "I've got a vibrating butthole..."

Those assembled at Caffe Bella to see KLED on Saturday night clamored for an encore. They were rewarded with what lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Pat Phlymm called the band's "sensual" song.

“...Trembling on me/ It yawns and slurps for a stab of your peni/ 'Cause I'm a gay man...”

KLED is a frightening band. I had seen them once before at the Blue Moon, and with a head full of cheap sake felt a jolt of panic. They created such a sense of confusion and disorientation, I believed I was hallucinating. Nothing that bizarre could be real.

The band includes lead singer and songwriter Pat, drummer Brian, bassist Jeff, and “stage prop” Chris. Brian and Pat both wore black skirts. Pat's naked torso was graffitied with black magic marker with the words Lump, Plow, Cat and Box, along with numerous X's. A stripe shaved down the center of his head - a kind of inverse Mohawk - had started to grow in. He loomed and gyrated above and before us; his open, friendly face only adding to the weirdness.

Two Nights Left to See Built to Spill In Seattle
Music

builttospill_thumb Built to Spill Will Probably Rock the Showbox
October 4th, 5th and 6th

The fact that I missed tonight's Built to Spill show at the Showbox isn't a big surprise. You see, I've never seen Built to Spill perform live.

This has not been an easy feat since I enjoy the Boise band quite a bit and, over the past 14 years, have had exactly 1,456,778,999,888 chances to see Doug Martsch and friends space jam, pop rock and generally do their sonic indie thing in concert.

So what in the name of noodling guitar noise makes me qualified to write this preview and recommend you catch the band on night two or three of there 3-day residency at Seattle's Showbox?

The Electric Six: Undisputed Kings of Hardcore Arena Disco Metal?
Music

Electric Six is sad
Electric Six are from Detroit.

According to Rachel from The Detroit Cobras, bands in her home town tour as often as possible to get the hell out of Detroit for as long as possible.

At the same time, Detroit has become sort of hip, mostly for people who have never been there. This is due, in part, to bands like The White Stripes, Von Bondies, Dirtbombs, and yes, Electric Six.

Alive and Kicking: Hey Marseilles, Friends and Harlequins Live at High Dive
Nada Mucho Presents
By Tyson Lynn
Monday, 17 September 2007

heymarseilles The sun briefly peered through the clouds early Sunday night, ending a daylong refusal to directly show itself. Around the High Dive, those touched by the heavenly beams found themselves happier, lighter. And then the music began.

Fiends and Harlequins are a local unsigned trio who madly dance the boundary between indulgence and adventure. Whipping through genres and melodies, they evoke Pink Floyd refracted through an At The Drive In Lens, an ADHD acid addict following brilliant tangents through darkened streets until they give way to the water.

The men of Fiends and Harlequins--bassist Josh Halbert (Fiend), guitarist Alex Bishop (Harlequin), and drummer Steve Barci (Fiend and Harlequin)--are all highly skilled in their instruments, but it is as a unit that they show of how much they are capable.

Saturday Bumbershoot Review: Alligator Kebobs, Mellow-Folk Rock and Blatant Insubordination
Music
By Matt Brown
Thursday, 13 September 2007
Nick Seymour of Crowded House thinks it's funny that they're regarded as a one hit wonder in the U.S....These were the Bumbershoot events NadaMucho assigned me on Saturday.

12:15 - 1:00: Step Cousins 1:30 - 2:00: Loop! Station
2:00 - 3:00: Picture & Sound: Music Videos
3:15 - 4:15: Honeydripper All Stars
3:45 - 4:45: I Love Led Zeppelin
5:15 - 6:15: Alela Diane
6:15 - 7:15: Head Automatica
7:00 - 8:15: Bert Jansch
8:00 - 9:15: Rude Mechanicals
9:00 - 10:00: Dystopia
10:00 - 11:00: Panic! At The Disco

As much as I would have loved to see Ellen Forney's multimedia presentation "I Love Led Zeppelin" or Jimmy Page's "inspiration", guitarist Bert Jansch (Page swiped Jansch's arrangement of the folk song "Blackwaterside" and renamed it "Black Mountain Side", taking the songwriting credit in true Zep fashion), I missed every single act I was scheduled to cover.

Bumbershoot Review: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of The Damnwells
Music
By Christian Klepac
Monday, 10 September 2007

damnwells_thumb If you missed the Damnwells at Bumbershoot last weekend, don't worry. You'll soon here a lot more about this little band.

In 2003, they recorded their first album, Bastards of the Beat, in a Manhattan storage unit. Their mix of indie pop, crunchy rock guitars, twangy hooks and psychedelic flourishes proved irresistible to many, including the folks at Epic, who signed the fledgling band then quickly dropped them, as fickle major labels are wont to do.

Luckily, the video camera was rolling the whole time, and what might have been just another hard luck rock story was recouped into Golden Days, a documentary about the Damnwells' rise, fall and redemption that proved charming and inspirational enough to take top honors at the 2007 Phoenix Film Festival.

Bumbershoot's Premature Ejaculation: Crowded House Live
Music
By Matt Brown
Thursday, 30 August 2007

crowdedhouse_thumbWhen Crowded House played their landmark reunion show at Coachella earlier this year to a crowd of rabid and impatient Rage Against The Machine fans, the plastic bottle that bounced off of frontman Neil Finn's head shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone. (It certainly wasn't to Finn, who had predicted as much during their warmup gig in Phoenix earlier that week.)

The surprise was that Crowded House, a cerebral pop band from New Zealand whose biggest U.S. hit charted 21 years ago, would be expected to elicit anything but derision from a young, aggressive American crowd.
