Mudville – Mudville

Mudville
Mudville
Slurry Records

The first thing I thought of when hearing Mudville was MC 900 Ft Jesus, except Mudville features a woman trying to sound like a jazz singer instead of a white guy telling stories. And there are fewer samples. And it sucks.

Then I listened to the EP a couple more times and realized it’s not that Mudville is inherently bad, it’s just that the EP isn’t really compelling enough to be anything other than background music. I hope that the band intended for it to be background, because it couldn’t work as much else.

Maybe record stores should be required to devote an entire section to background music. I think that’d be cool, but only if they didn’t charge so much for music like Mudville.
