Substation in Seattle

Hey Kids: We’re doing it again!

Our fourth annual #NadaFest takes place Oct. 19-21 at Substation and YOU SHOULD TOTALLY COME.

Why? Well, for starters, we’ve got 24 great bands performing. That’s eight acts each night rotating between the club’s main stage and charming “Chandelier Room” (where I sometimes sit stage right while the bands are playing because I am old and need to rest my back when I get the chance because I usually don’t stay at rock clubs for five full hours anymore) so that you can maximize your new music intake without any downtime.

Just as you’re realizing fall is in full swing and summer festival is over, #NadaFest provides a great opportunity to see a bunch of great local music before you get busy with the holiday season. Plus: it’s only $10 a night.

Each act on the bill has appeared on one of four lists of emerging local acts we’ve been keeping an eye on the last four years: #41for2018, #41for2017, #41for2016 and #41for2015. These are the musical acts in Seattle that have yet to break through to widespread local, regional or national acclaim, but that deserve to do just that. #NadaFest is a place where local music fans have had the chance to see acts that are now staples of the local festival circuit, like Ever So Android and Future Shock in 2015; Wild Powwers, Versing, Donormaal and Snuff Redux in 2016; and Monsterwatch, Steal Shit Do Drugs and Astro King Phoenix in 2017.

This year we have some returning acts including staff favorites Crazy Eyes and Downtown, as well as groups who’ve gotten the nod for 2018 slots at the Capitol Hill Block Party, Upstream, Timber Fest and other festivals since our list came out this spring. Attendees this year will get early looks at Strawberry Mountain, Beverly Crusher, Nauticult, Weep Wave, Seacats and Jake Laundry. Expect lots more from these acts in coming months and years.

If you’re unfamiliar with Substation, it’s a cozy club with a 150 person capacity tucked across the street from a power plant right as Fremont bleeds into Ballard. Local music scribe Alexa Peters included it in her recent article titled “7 great neighborhood clubs for live music” article for the Seattle Times. There are cold drinks and homemade tamales and a little area in between the main room and the back room where you can hang out and talk to people (or buy some rad merch!). There’s also a couch in the hall outside the back entrance to the bar where you can sit if you’re tired and still hear the main stage act perfectly. This is where I will send many of the Tweets from @ashmatty and @nadamucho from during #NadaFest 2018.
