edible darling
Bardic Records
By Paul Groth

“You jerk stop that whining and open up your eyes.”

Those are words from the New York City-based singer/songwriter Ben Arthur song “Mercy” on his latest release edible darling. The funny thing is that he’s singing this on the fifth track and I was thinking this VERY thing on the first.

A little advice: Don’t buy this record! It’s not worth your time and money. I spent 41 minutes and 52 seconds listening to this album tip to tail. Actually, I spent more time trying to find songs that would stick out when giving it a cursory listen, but trying to give this thing a semi-positive review is almost as impossible as me finding something I’d like to wear at a shopping mall. Speaking of malls, if you’re interested in this record you’d probably hear something similar pumping out of the sound system at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. This is “indie” mall music; indie music only because it’s on a small label. The album cover to edible darling (NOTE: Title cleverly written in lower case) is one thing I actually like. It’s eye catching, but then again so is the neon Pepsi sign on Aurora Avenue in Seattle.

The lyrics are bland at best. Lines like, “All your grinding gives me zipper burn on my dick,” and “All this dry humping must lead to something” do not create any sympathy on the listener’s part. Furthermore, if you look at this guy’s picture on the back of the CD, you’d wonder why such a good looking dude is suffering from constant blue balls.

Apparently this album focuses on Ben Arthur’s singing and songwriting. And I guess the most appropriate comparisons I can make are that his vocals have the faux charm of the Barenaked Ladies, and that the lyrics are a pre-pubescent version of Hall and Oates. I tried like hell to find some redeeming qualities in this artist so I went to his website. But when I went to check out tour dates and other minutia, I was whisked away from his site to his MySpace profile. A bit of advice: Save your money Ben! MySpace.com is free and your site isn’t. To end on a positive note, the album production is slick like a ‘90’s James Taylor record…and just as boring.
