The Hunger Mountain Boys Blue Ribbon Waltz By Julia Eaton, Cranky Ex-punk Housewife If the Hunger Mountain Boys were in the literary world, they would be classified as genre fiction, but I hope they can catapult into the mass-market. Keep in mind where this opinion is coming from. I’m fairly certain that at some point in a past life I was an old man with no teeth sitting on my porch, pickin’ at my banjo and spittin’ chew at my hound dog. I’m all about early 20th century mountain people. I played some tracks for my husband and he wrinkled his nose and said, “Oh, that is so … jaunty!” So, based on his reaction, maybe they are destined to be stuck in a genre mold. But I don’t care, I love them. They have fiddles and gee-tars, some wonderful harmonies and the songs stick in your head like old Burl Ives or your great-grandpa’s drinkin’ songs. You’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t give the Hunger Mountain Boys at least a couple listens, if for no other reason than to appreciate some timeless music. |
