Blowing North from the Bay Area, the Silversun Pickups current tour brings them to Seattle for an all-ages show April 28 at the Paradox.

With an impressive hold on the clever art of rationing bubblegum and experimental indie-rock, melancholy melodies seem to just pour from these musicians and evoke an intense, satisfying emotional landscape. Comparable to the Smashing Pumpkins in both instrumental and vocal style, SSPU seem to catch the ear of even the most pretentious of scenesters in just a moment's listen.

Pikul (pronounced 'pie-kull') is the most recent release from this group, an EP released on Dangerlion Records. The CD’s opening track, “Kissing Families,” is a blend of guitars, cello, and drums, and explores the complexities and cheapness of what indie rock has become. “Comeback Kid” is another dark indie gem. Hell, what am I saying, this hole CD is a gripping gem of a debut – it’s dark, emotional, complex and has just the right amount of pop to keep it’s listener from getting bored.

To summarize: this is great shit. If the Silversun Pickups’ live show is anywhere near as good as their awesome debut CD, you won’t want to miss them in the intimate confines of Ballard’s Paradox Theatre this Friday. (0) Comments
