Peter Cameron – I wonder if the ancient Egyptians felt it necessary to separate art from the artist. Life was brutish and brief back then, so I’m not sure what an artist could’ve done to offend those ancient sensibilities. The main concern, I imagine, would’ve been trying not to offend the Pharaoh.
Peter Cameron – Life almost never gives us what we want. It bitters our hearts. We stuff those bitter hearts into cities and towns and, with The Banshees of Inisherin, Martin McDonagh stuffs them onto an island in the Irish Sea.
Peter Cameron – George Sluzier’s late ’80s film The Vanishing makes it unnervingly clear that humanizing a monster is more frightening than a mask. Freddy and Jason can hack to bits as many victims as they want, it still won’t scare me as much as the unspeakable acts that humans are capable of.
Peter Cameron – If I was a GIF, there’d be the word “SIFF” flashing while a wild man dances a jig. “SIFF! SIFF! SIFF! Thank God for SIFF!” The festival’s enthusiasm for film filled me with joy. The passion was infectious. And I’m so God damn glad I went.
