Be There Too: Decibel Festival Starts Wednesday

On the first night of the 2014 Decibel Festival, the Opening Gala at EMP is an obvious choice. I’ll get to see Vancouver duo Sabota; Portland’s Natasha Kmeto with visuals from Effixx; and locally based Lusine. But inevitably at a festival as well curated as Decibel, I wish I could be in two places at once.

In the Sky Church, Kinesthesia, the Optical showcase, is tempting. The line-up: DJ Total Freedom; mulitdisciplinary artist The Sight Below (pictured above at Decibel last year); Max Cooper’s audio/visual debut of ‘Emergence’; and Arca, with Jesse Kanda’s visuals.

But the shows on the third floor, including future-soul queen JusMoni; the sometimes jazz-inflected DJAO; and out of Montreal, Lunice’s trap and Kaytranada’s RnB might just pull me away.

There’s plenty to see at EMP, but if you pick one of the other venues, maybe BRAIDS and Son Lux at the Crocodile, for example, let me know how it goes. I wish I could be there too.
