Bumbershoot Preview: Roky Erickson and the Explosives
For many, myself included, this promises to be the triumphant highlight of the festival. Roky Erickson was always a Lovecraftian character to me, a Syd Barrett-style wizard recluse who fell away from a successful psychedelic band for being, well, too psychedelic, then crafted some brilliantly deranged solo music before disappearing up his own third eye.
Unlike Barrett, Roky’s signature album (The Evil One) rocked like hell, a tour-de-force of sludgy riffs and pre-grunge anthems about fire demons and two-headed dogs.
Also unlike Barrett, Roky has returned to the stage, a feat even those close to him did not suspect was within his powers. The old sorcerer is embarking on his career’s third act, and his acolytes will be out in force to cheer him on.
Roky Erickson plays the Starbucks stage Monday, September 3 at 6:45 p.m. We neglected to tell Chris Klepac that he couldn’t realistically make every entry on his Monday schedule even if he had a helicopter.
