Marijuana Deathsquads: Demanding Focus
Marijuana Deathsquads – Oh My Sexy Lord
By Aino Vaino
Oh My Sexy Lord, the latest release from Minneapolis band Marijuana Deathsquads, is an album that gets better the more and the louder you listen to it.
This is an impressive feat, given it’s pretty good to begin with. But the more time you spend with it the more transcendent it becomes and the more you get lost in the pools of sound.
The album builds and explodes halfway through the first track, “Ewak Sadness,” but it doesn’t stop there. Each song makes unexpected moves, rare moments in music these days, and leaves the listener expanded.
There’s breathtaking moments in every song on this album, none of which are easily handled. You can’t play them in the background. They demand to be concentrated on.
A particular high point in the cascade of sound unleashed on Oh My Sexy Lord is “Stacks.” Also, “Vibrant Beast” and “8 9 3.”
There’s really no low-point either. The beginning of “Bad Boy Masterpiece” is kinda annoying, but then the song kicks off and makes up for it.
I think this is one of the best and most original albums of the year. – (10/10)
Marijuana Deathsquads perform November 23 at Seattle’s Showbox at the Market. Visit their website for a full tour schedule.
