It goes without saying The New Pornographers, the Canadian indie pop superband, features some insane talent and big personalities. Neko Case, Dan Bejar and Kathryn Calder all have intense musical chops. But without the guiding leadership of frontman A.C. Newman, this talent could go to waste.
This leadership will be on full display Friday at The Crocodile Friday night when Newman shows up for a solo show. While he provides the Pornographers with the direction they need, his experience with that band definitely influences his solo work.
And, as they say—or really should say—you can take the man out of the Pornographers, but you can’t take the pornographers out of the man. Newman’s wheelhouse is on full display in his latest solo work, Shut Down the Streets. The project might not sound as poppy as a New Pornographers album, but it shows a maturity in lyrics and chord progressions that feels mellow and exciting at the same time.
Los Angeles band Harriet, wich is lead by former Dawes band member Alex Casnoff and released new album The Right Story earlier this year, will bring its own brand of eerie, character driven alt rock to the opening set.
