I’ve been a huge fan of Savannah, Georgia metal band Baroness (pictured above) since about 2004 and have been following their evolving sound ever since. I’ve been lucky enough to see them live a handful of times and they just keep getting better and better, so I headed down to the Showbox Market (#SaveTheShowbox) on March 19 with my camera to catch them live with post-metal band Deafhaven and Zeal & Ardor, who bring a more avant-garde approach to the genre.

It was a stacked bill top-to-bottom and all three bands sounded great. Both Baroness and Deafheaven have an incredible stage presence and, while the bands are incredibly different, they are just similar enough to complement each other well.

I wasn’t too familiar with Deafheaven going into the show but was absolutely floored by how slick and polished they were. Zeal & Ardor never fails to impress with their music and live show.  I will catch them every chance I get.

All three bands put on impressive performances and had the crowd eating out of the palms of their hands.

It’s unlikely we’ll get the chance to see these three great bands again on one bill, but I’ll make sure to catch any of them on their own the next time they come through town. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for Barnoness to come back: they release their new album Gold & Grey June 14 on Abraxan Hymns records.

Below are some of my favorite photos from the evening. Lots more on our Flickr page.
