The lights glittered and the sea of fans shimmied all night at the sold out Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UMO) show at the Neptune Theatre on Jan. 29. The evening began with Seattle act Hibou rippling through a set of dreamy surf pop tunes. Lower Dens followed like crashing waves with their experimental sounds before the harmony of hundreds of ecstatic hollers greeted Ruban Nielson and his band as they trickled onto the stage to begin their set. UMO, loved by their fans for their psychedelic “depression funk,” mesmerized the aquatic themed house by bringing (almost) the entirety of their most recent album, Multi-Love, along with many of their older tracks to life that night.
The Portland band’s live performance is the kind that sweeps you away, whether you are in the front watching the heart and soul that goes into each guitar stroke and drum beat or whether you are in the back of the house closing your eyes and swaying to Ruban’s voice floating over the dreamy tracks. With their modern, yet timeless sound, both on record and in their performance, there is no doubt that UMO’s tide will only keep rising from here.
