XXX: A Review of the Latest Album from Sasquatch 2013 Artist Danny Brown
Danny Brown
XXX
By Astro De Rosa
Toothless Detroit native Danny Brown breaks through the underground with a distinct, abrasive flow, clever metaphors and vulgar obscenities on his second release. Equal parts brilliance and insanity, the edgy performer raps charismatically through the record with an intense sense of self destruction. The apathy of XXX may rub the contemporary hip hop audience the wrong way, but that seems to be exactly what Brown intended.
A recent signee to Brooklyn’s Fools Gold label, Brown gets first pick at a wide range of well-produced tracks from the label and it’s affiliates. XXX is a cycle of nineteen songs about addiction, sex, and how much other rappers suck. “So, no apology for all the misogyny, I just want your company, to come and watch some porn with me,” he exclaims. There is an unrelenting likableness to Danny which stems from his comedic sheik along with an unhealthy Adderall problem.
He is a modern day Richard Pryor with enough wit (dick jokes) and charm (drug references) to likely win over the average NadaMucho.com reader. (7/10)
Danny Brown is one of about 8 million cool acts playing the yearly Sasquatch Music Festival Memorial Day weekend at the Gorge in George, Washington.
