Tennis Pro: Somewhere Between Borg and McEnroe

by on May 6th, 2005 | No Comments »

Tennis Pro are just the type of good-time alt-pop band Seattle needs. Smart enough to write catchy, clever songs that get stuck in your head like a really good commercial jingle without annoying the snot of you, talented enough to make music that rivals the band’s admitted idols Fountains of Wayne and Weezer without sounding exactly like either, and cool enough to throw in a largely unnecessary 70s-retro-tennis-schtick for good measure.

The Orphan Project: Writing Anthems for the Discontent

Matt Ashworth – To be an orphan implies the lack of a biological family. Perhaps not surprisingly, disciplines as varied as psychology, statistics and Broadway musical story lines all support the idea that unrelated individuals can often form a very strong, almost familial bond. Such is the case with Seattle band the Orphan Project, a group of genetically unrelated blood brothers who, in just their early twenties, have already pledged their allegiance to their musical family more strongly than most rock n’ roll bands will ever do.

Cult Classics: The Pogues’ If I Should Fall from Grace with God

by on July 23rd, 2004 | No Comments »

Matt Ashworth – It is 3 a.m. and you are passed out on the floor of your living room after drinking pints of Guiness with your three dearest friends all night. In the background you can hear a CD playing that isn’t from your own collection. It sounds Irish, perhaps due to the mandolin, concertina, and other traditional instrumentation. But no Irish Rovers this, you muse. The singer’s raspy, alluring drawl makes him sound as drunk as you are.
