Tim Basaraba – In 2021, we saw two of our most celebrated living directors remake what felt like personal favorites. Steven Spielberg with Westside Story (the original was made in 1961) and Guillermo del Toro with Nightmare Alley (1947).
Tim Basaraba – Maybe remakes aren’t a soulless Hollywood cash grab after all? Guillermo del Toro’s remake of Nightmare Alley (1947) was one of my favorite films of 2021 so why couldn’t another master director competently blend nostalgia and modern craftsmanship to recreate a classic?
Tim Basaraba – Wow! Gotham finally seems like a real place we can visit. The latest in DC’s growing catalogue of films centered around the beloved caped crusader, The Batman, shows us what it’s like for the young hero to build a moral code and be allowed to fail as he figures out his role in a modern city with modern problems.
Tim Basaraba – I expected Spencer to be a formulaic biopic about Princess Di. Instead, I got a meditative arthouse film with an impressive dramatic performance by Kristen Stewart. What a pleasant surprise.
