Tim Basaraba – Hey! Let’s add a “The” to the title and hope everyone forgets the fact that the same film came out five years ago. I assume that was James Gunn’s pitch to Warner Brothers. At the time he signed on to direct, Gunn was a hot–if not the hottest–director in the superhero genre.
Tim Basaraba – “Here we go, another reboot….yawn,” my brain said as I sat in an empty theater. Was the original Candyman (1992) a masterpiece? Was it so good that any attempt to remake or reboot it could be considered blasphemy? No. So what was my problem?
Tim Basaraba – There are very few pieces of art I will automatically consume without question–but Grant Morrison’s comic books, Lupe Fiasco’s music, and any film with the A24 stamp are on my short list.
Tim Basaraba – Having never seen the original Space Jam (1996) I was curious to see if m the theater would be full of parents seeking nostalgia with their kids. It was. Being a bit too old and not a huge fan of the NBA, the original was never on my radar, but its star was an undeniable icon of that generation. Could this new film be, well…a new legacy?
Tim Basaraba – Marvel’s first Venom film was directed by Ruben Fleischer, the comedic/action virtuoso behind Zombieland and its sequel Zombieland: Double Tap, and the mixture of his direction and Tom Hardy’s over-the-top approach made it a box office smash in 2018. So why wasn’t Fleischer back as the director for the sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage? I am not sure, but the film was clearly in great hands with Andy Serkis (Breath, 2017).
