From the extreme Satanism of black metal to the Catholic mysticism of Black Sabbath, metal has always dipped into religion and spirituality for inspiration. Recent movements have pushed the spiritual boundaries further into a kind of metal asceticism based on restricted and conceptual musical ideas. Bands like Sunn O))), Earth, and Boris often produce music that has more in common with Steve Reich than Sabbath.
Matt Brown – The altar of The Riff is massive beyond comprehension. It demands constant sacrifice of blood and teeth and hair and jism to keep from crushing us all. Akimbo have stood astride the altar of The Riff for over a decade, sneering at the waves of puny humanity that dash themselves against the crimson stained stage.
Kasey Anderson – From a journalistic standpoint, it makes sense to compare the Capitol Hill Block Party to Bumbershoot. Both take place in Seattle; both purport themselves to be celebrations of “culture” or some variation thereof; both offer their respective audiences a plethora of options in terms of live musical entertainment.
Tyson Lynn – Conor Byrne was the first place Hey Marseilles played, but that’s not quite true. To be honest, they weren’t called anything really. You paid your cover by a sign that said The Matt Bishop Project. It’s what they offered up to the venue when they booked the gig.
