November 28, 2004 was the last time I had the privilege of seeing Omaha, Nebraska band The Faint live in concert. Before last Friday night, it had been even longer since I stepped a foot into the historic Neptune Theater located in the university district of Seattle.
When the Afghan Whigs dissolved in 2001 I resigned myself to the fact that I never saw them play live. In 2012 they reformed for a few special concerts, including a SXSW appearance with Usher, but it wasn’t until early 2014 when I heard they were putting out a new album and touring the West Coast that I got my hopes up.
And there it was again, the magical city in the middle of nowhere –materializing out of thin air like a song, Austin Psych Fest –a 21st Century Bedouin tent encampment for the world’s psychedelic music nomads. Or nomadic psychedelic musicians. Or nomadic musicians on psychedelics. The possibilities are endless.
