It had probably been 10 years since I saw Jason Webley perform. At that time, he was just a solo act, playing an accordian and singing “old-timey” style songs. So there was no way for me to anticipate the high concept performance art piece I was about to witness.
From the extreme Satanism of black metal to the Catholic mysticism of Black Sabbath, metal has always dipped into religion and spirituality for inspiration. Recent movements have pushed the spiritual boundaries further into a kind of metal asceticism based on restricted and conceptual musical ideas.
