Matt Ashworth – Welcome once more to “41 Bands to Watch,” our annual ritual connecting you –our valued reader— with Seattle’s most exciting underground bands. It’s like the Audubon Society for audiophiles, except we watch bands instead of birds take flight.
Cameron Deuel – Bandcamp is the single greatest music discovery platform in existence because it grants you instant access to an ecosystem of music in virtually every genre from artists around the world. Here are a few outstanding releases from May.
Sam Chapman – Laura Marling looks fragile. It’s a Friday afternoon and the sun’s finally shining outside, but at the moment, the KEXP performance space is illuminated by hundreds of small bulbs that dance behind Marling and her band as they play. She wears a skirt and a red blouse- floral-patterned, feminine, borderline frilly. When she speaks, her face placid, she seems thoughtful but reserved. She doesn’t smile much.
Andy Bookwalter – Oh Sasquatch, you’re really pushing your luck. 21 Pilots? 21 Pilots? Saturday’s headliner at the yearly gathering of forward-thinking musicians appears to be a band that 90 percent of their fans will need a ride from their Moms to see, and the Gorge is a hell of a drive from the Power 93.3 (Seattle’s New #1 For Hit Music!) listening area, but who knows? Maybe if I just give them a chance they’ll turn out to be geniuses?
