I saw live music for the first time when I was fourteen. The summer between middle school and high school, the time when peers start to become temperamental creatures stuck between childhood and adulthood, I went to Bumbershoot with three of my best friends and I totally fucked up.
Two things define nearly every song in The Hold Steady repertoire—speak/sing vocals with incredible lyrics from Craig Finn and the thrashing guitar of Tad Kubler. Combine them, and you get The Hold Steady.
One of this year’s SXSW buzz bands, The Wytches, caught my attention with theirmix of influences. They seem kind of like a Nuggets-era surf band that lived long enough to hear Nirvana and McLusky, which puts them squarely at the center of my musical wheelhouse. In preparation of the British band’s first visit to Seattle, I chatted with singer and guitarist Kristian Bell online.
Wednesday night at Neumos, it’s going to get weird. Like, really weird. Berlin-based garage rock King Khan & the Shrines are nearing the end of their U.S. tour with fairly unknown opener Red Mass and will be joined by local-Seattle psychedelic sons The Night Beats.
