Shellac 101: Splendid Minimalism

John Regan – I recently caught the band Shellac, the Chicago-based three piece and math rock aficionados, for a pair of intimate sets—on October 6 and 7, respectively—at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle. I had never seen the same band (or any band for that matter) on consecutive nights before and after this amazing experience, I may never be the same.

Jason Murray – Remove all the doors to the venue and the positive atmosphere still couldn’t have escaped the Showbox – SoDo during The Internet’s live performance last month. According to front-woman, Syd, Seattle is one of her favorite cities. Given the rowdy crowd that assembled for the show, which was part of the Los Angeles’ group’s Hive Mind Tour, I’m not surprised.

Todd Terry – I went to my first Bumbershoot a few months after moving to Seattle in 1996. For a mere $10 I saw sets by Sex Pistols, Combustible Edison, Goldfinger, Mudhoney, and MxPx on a sunny Friday. I have been to Bumbershoot nearly every year since, and needless to say, in the year of our lord 2018, it is a very different animal than it was back then.
